The Vineyards and the Grapes

In April of 2016, we planted additional vines. We have 4 vineyards throughout the farm.

In 2016, we planted several different varietals (in addition to the Vignoles that were planted in 2015):  Marquette, Traminette, Norton, and Niagara.

Marquette is a blue/black-berried variety that creates a medium bodied red wine.   Marquette is the cousin of Frontenac, a well-known French-American hybrid, and the grandson of Pinot Noir. Marquette wines are typically medium bodied, with aromas of cherries, blackcurrants and blackberries. In better examples, more complex aromas such as tobacco and leather may also be exhibited, with spicy pepper notes on the finish.

Traminette is a hybrid white grape variety.   It is the result of a crossing between Gewurztraminer and Joannes Seyve, and retains some of its more famous parents’ characteristics: Traminette wines tend to be floral and spicy, and are made in both dry and off-dry white wine styles.

Niagara is a light-skinned hybrid variety that produces a very nice white wine. Wines made from Niagara are light and grapey and it plays second fiddle to Riesling.

Norton grapes produce a rich, full-bodied red wine with character, balanced with good, almost Zinfandel-like mixed-berry flavors. It shows both red and black fruits on the nose and palate and a unique, but intriguing flavor profile, soft on first taste but firming up with a good core of acidity in the finish. Norton’s berry flavors pair well with grilled meats, smoked meat and wild game.

In July of 2016, we trellised the healthy and fast-growing vines in the vineyards.

In 2017, we planted Cayuga White. This versatile grape can be made into a semi-dry to sweet wine and is often blended with other white hybrids.

During the 2017 Solar Eclipse, we harvested some of the Vignoles grapes. Soon they will be “ECLIPSO” Vignoles wine.

The vines continue to grow. In a few short years, all of the grapes will be ready to harvest.
